Khangzar palace or locally known as the Khangzar Khar is the only palace which exists in the sTod valley (the upper valley of Lahaul valley). It was the home of the Jo/Thakurs/Wazir of Khangzar and the birthplace of Queen mother of Ladakh, Rani Parvati Devi Deskit Wangmo.
Yesterday the villagers of sTod valley (the upper valley of Lahaul valley) celebrated the Chodpa festival at the Khar where the villagers gathered and paid respect to the local Gods.
This festival is celebrated twice a year, once during the summer season and the other time during the winter season. The dates for this celebration are decided according to the local village calendar.
The villagers form a large circle inside the palace courtyard and dance in the local nati dance form. The legend says that the people imitate the dance form which is said to be simultaneously performed by the Gods in the mountain opposite the palace.
We do not know whether this legend is the actual history or myth. A few people have documented and put an effort into finding the truth but we could not find it in our online or offline resources. Perhaps, we’ll be able to compile the history later.
